Dairy System Monitoring (DSM)

How will this collegial approach to business continue in the digital age?

DSM is the brainchild of Chris Lewis, senior dairy consultant and partner of Baker & Associates. We have immensely useful farm modelling software available to us, and the internet which allows extremely rapid transfer of information. Connect the two together and you have an interactive tool that will direct, motivate and build on the competitive spirit.

How does this multi tool work?

At the start of each season the farm is modelled on either Farmax Dairy or UDDER. This where the famer and consultant work together, bringing the physical and financial plans together.

What will the farm to produce, what does it need in terms of resources to achieve this – reported in ten daily periods – which empowers the day to day manager of the farm? Then what are the summary outcomes for the season.

Data is then captured at the end of each month from the manager and dairy company website to update the computer model. Each month the consultant generates a revised position which is uploaded onto the internet. The entire process can take less than a week.

Farmers can access the internet site (www.dairysystems.co.nz) and see their revised reports. They can also elect to be benchmarked against businesses whose data is captured and reported in the same manner. Each month performance can be compared and relative strengths and weaknesses of the business diagnosed.

DSM is utilised by five independent consultancy firms delivering benchmarks for the Waikato, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, Tararua, Manawatu, Wairarapa, Rotorua, Takaka, Canterbury Otago and Southland districts.

Baker & Associates provides DSM as part of a packaged service. The client gets the monthly updated models and the benchmarking, but they also get the opportunity to be involved in DSM group meetings. There are three to four of these a year and this includes study tour and an end of season presentation with a final comprehensive report with individual interpretation (report card) for the year.

With the Farmax Dairy tool now in use with DSM farmers can also elect to share the computer model. Farmax Tools or for the advanced user Farmax Pro can be installed and they can use the software to deliberate on their own analysis and scenario planning.

So the key outcomes are:

  • Monthly updates of the management system.
  • Computer model on UDDER or Farmax for scenario planning.
  • Benchmarking to compare business performance with others.
  • Three networking meetings per year to meet other users and discuss the results.
  • Annual report that gathers the data in one document. This document becomes the “annual report card” of the individual business's strengths and weaknesses.
  • Farmer access to valid Farmax Dairy models.
  • Over the years a database develops for each individual farm, effectively becoming an interactive diary.
